Do you often find yourself emotionally unsettled by seemingly minor events, disappointed when things don’t go as planned, or anxious when comparing yourself to others? Perhaps you frequently feel an undefined worry about the future, much like I once did.
In Fractal Psychology, we believe that these emotional reactions stem from within. When the cause is internal, addressing it can ease these emotional responses. By mastering this process with repetition and consistency, you can effectively manage your emotional state.
On the other hand, as long as you attribute your feelings to external factors, you’ll continue to live with the uncertainty of when and how your emotions might be triggered. This anxiety tends to grow as we grow older.
These heavy emotions—such as sadness, anger, frustration, guilt, regret, despair, and jealousy—often originate from old childhood memories stored deep within our emotional brain.
For example, as we transition from infancy to early childhood, we gain new abilities and experience joy, excitement, and love. However, a baby’s brain might misinterpret reduced maternal attention—due to increased independence or the arrival of a sibling—as being neglected or rejected. These early experiences shape beliefs like:
- I was betrayed
- I was abandoned
- I was ignored
- I was rejected
- I was unprotected
- I was unloved
- I was not understood, etc.
These beliefs linger and can trigger emotional reactions throughout your entire life.
The next time you’re overwhelmed by a familiar emotional wave, try this: connect with the youngest version of yourself who first felt this emotion, typically before the age of six. Imagine comforting and listening to this inner child, empathizing with their feelings. Then, ask what outcome or emotional experience they would prefer instead. Together with your adult self, find ways to create this new experience—perhaps by singing, exercising, taking a walk, playing with a pet, or engaging in creative activities. This practice helps you release negative emotions and embrace new, positive experiences.
Consistent self-care like this nurtures self-love, reduces the need for external validation, and empowers you to care for your emotional well-being with courage. By unraveling and updating these old childhood beliefs, you'll gradually lift the constraints on your heart and unlock more of your innate potential.
